Nikko-Bori is a type of woodcarving from Tochigi Prefecture
For the reconstruction of Toshogu Shrine in 1634, master craftsmen from all over the country were gathered to Nikko, including “horimono-daiku”, carpenters specializing in wood transom carving
During their free time, “horimono-daiku” produced other wood carved items and this is said to be the origin of present day Nikko-bori
Peony flowers are traditionally associated with nobility and stateliness, therefore symbolizes wealth and happiness
It is also represents perseverance, longevity and beauty
