Katazome (Stencil-Dyed) Haori with Colourful Lining

• A haori is a traditional jacket worn over a kimono, usually hip or thigh length

• It functions more like a Western cardigan or light coat and is worn open at the front

• Haori himo (small decorative cords) can be used to fasten it loosely

• The textile of this vintage haori has been made by the katazome stencil dye technique

• An interesting shimmery fabric which at certain angles reveals a pattern beneath the surface design

• Another hidden feature of this piece is the colourful almost tropical choice of the lining fabric

• This is reminiscent of the Edo period when laws banned ordinary citizens from wearing luxurious fabrics and bright colours in public

• To express their personal style, they turned to Ura-masaru (hidden fashion), keeping their kimono modest and plain on the outside, but lined with lavish, at times expensive bright-coloured fabrics with intricate artwork on the inside

• It still has its Shitsuke-ito, long basting stitches in white thread used to hold the fabric layers flat and maintain its shape during storage

• Gently pull out the stitches and remove before wearing

• An unused vintage pair of haori himo is included

• A Tanuki (raccoon dog) is a wild animal native to Japan and East Asia

• Despite its resemblance to the North American raccoon, it is actually a member of the dog family and more closely related to foxes, wolves, and domestic dogs

• In Japanese folklore, the Tanuki is a mischievous and jolly shapeshifter, as well as a symbol of good fortune and prosperity

• Shigaraki Ware Tanuki statues typically feature Hasso Engi (eight distinct lucky traits) designed to bring success to a household or business

• Stunning one-of-a-kind bag, handmade utilizing a high quality vintage obi belt which in parts has used real Hon-kinpaku (gold leaf) threads in its design

• It features a beautiful selection of Japanese imagery with a pheasant in flight over a waterfall, as well as a variety of seasonal florals and the traditional motifs of Shouchikubai (Matsu Pine, Bamboo and Plum Blossoms)

Ceramic Demitasse Cup & Saucer

• Shino Ware is a type of Mino Ware from Gifu Prefecture that dates back to the late 16th century

• Its key characteristics are a thick milky-white feldspar glaze with hi-iro (scarlet/reddish-brown) markings and iron-painted decoration

• Shino Ware was the first Japanese ware to use an underglaze technique in which patterns, such as plants and flowers, were painted using iron oxide before an overglaze was applied

• There are various types of Shino ware, including Muji Shino (plain white), E-shino (with painted designs) and Nezumi Shino (greyish tone)

• This cup and saucer set was made in the Nezumi Shino style - nezumi meaning mouse, in reference to its grey colour

• For Nezumi Shino, Oniita (iron slip) is applied to the clay body and specific areas of the design are carved using tools like a chisel (sgraffito technique)

• A thick layer of feldspar glaze is applied over the surface before firing

• During the firing, the areas retaining the iron slip turn into a mouse grey hue, while the carved sections reveal the white clay body beneath

• This set clearly shows the above technique and has a modern, almost geometric design

• The cup is slightly larger than a demitasse cup, and the saucer can also be used as a small side dish, perhaps for some biscuits to enjoy with your espresso

Original Hanga (Woodblock Print) Postcard

• Printed around 1950s-60s by Tomikichiro Tokuriki

• Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902-2000) was a Sousaku hanga (creative prints) artist who mainly featured Kyoto scenes in his work

• After WWII he set up his own publishing company, producing woodblock print postcards of his designs as well as other artists

• This print is an original by Tokuriki, marked “Tomi” for “Tomikichiro” in the left hand bottom corner

• Sanjusangendo is the alternative name for Rengeo-in Temple in Kyoto, known for its 1001 statues of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion

• Founded in 1164, the temple was rebuilt a century later after being destroyed by fire

• Its main hall measures 120 meters in length, making it Japan’s longest wooden structure

• In the center of the hall is a large Senju Kannon (1000-armed Kannon) statue, flanked by 500 human-sized Kannon statues on either side

Shippo-yaki (Enamel) Dish with Warbler & Cherry Blossom

• Contemporary decorative dish by Ando Cloisonne

• Ando Cloisonne was founded by Shigezaemon Ando in 1880, initially as a tobacco pipe merchants in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture

• As luxurious, elegant and modern cloisonne became popular at international exhibitions and exports grew, he established a factory in 1889, appointing the grandson of Tsunekichi Kaji (the originator of Owari Cloisonne) as factory manager

• By the following year, Ando had expanded to a prime location in Ginza, Tokyo

• In 1900, Ando Cloisonne was honored by being named a purveyor to the Imperial Household Agency which, at the time, was considered the highest honor among merchants and craftspeople

• This piece uses Gin-sai, a technique in which a textured layer of pure silver foil is applied to the background before being covered with translucent glass glazes

• It features an uguisu(bush warbler/nightingale) with cherry blossoms, both classic spring season motifs

• Although a decorative plate, this can also be used as a trinket tray

• Hama-yaki or Yokohama-yaki (Yokohama Ware) was a traditional craft from Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture

• Plain white porcelain or earthenware manufactured in other regions such as Arita and Seto were shipped to workshops in the port city of Yokohama

• There, local artisans hand-painted the final decoration and carried out overglaze firing before the finished pieces were exported overseas

• This vase has been painted with peonies in red and pink with added gold gilding, similar to Satsuma and Kutani designs

• Mold marks can be seen where two sections of porcelain were pressed together to create the vase

• Vintage from late Showa Period (1970-80s)

• Kimekomi Ningyo (Doll) are said to originate in Kyoto with around a 280 year history

• They are traditional Japanese Dolls where kimono fabric and hands are inserted into grooves carved onto the body

• Facial features are hand-painted onto heads made of plaster using special fine-tipped brushes

• Hagoromo (The Feather Mantle) is a Noh play, the earliest reference of which dates back to 1524

• The story is of a fisherman who discovers a celestial maiden's feathered mantle on a pine branch which she needs to ascend back to heaven

• He agrees to return it, but only if she performs a heavenly dance for him

• Wearing the feathered mantle she dances for the fisherman, celebrating the beauty of nature and the changing seasons within her movements, before soaring up to the heavens

• This figurine is of the celestial maiden in this play, a symbolic figure representing divine purity and the connection between heaven and earth

• Karahashi Ware is pottery from Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, established in 1989 by Yoshikazu Wakayama

• Having trained at a long-established Shigaraki pottery prior to opening his own kiln, his unique blend of techniques can be seen in his pieces

• The blue glaze used is referred to as Biwako Blue and represents the blue of Japan’s largest freshwater lake, Lake Biwa, which occupies one-sixth of Shiga Prefecture’s area

• His main motif is the Fukuro (owl), considered to be auspicious, symbolizing good fortune, longevity and business prosperity, being able to see in all directions as it can turn its neck 360 degrees

• Most Karahashi Ware owls have their eyes closed, signifying the nurturing of dreams; when they open their eyes, they are able to see the world clearly

High Quality Silk Haori with Floral Design

• A haori is a traditional jacket worn over a kimono, usually hip or thigh length

• It functions more like a Western cardigan or light coat and is worn open at the front

• Haori himo (small decorative cords) can be used to fasten it loosely

• With meticulously tidy hand-stitching on the sleeves, this is a high quality garment using extremely smooth silk that has a fluid-like feel and cool to the touch

• The orange, green and white floral design pops against the contrast of the deep blue base colour (the blue is slightly darker than how it appears in photos)

• It still has its Shitsuke-ito, long basting stitches in white thread used to hold the fabric layers flat and maintain its shape during storage

• Chigiri-e is a traditional Japanese art form where hand-torn colored paper is used to create artwork

• As Chigiru means to tear or shred and e means picture, Chigiri-e translates as painting with paper

• Tearing the paper by hand creates soft feathery edges allowing the colours to blend well

• The torn pieces are glued onto a backing and layered to build depth, shadows and dimension

• Unlike Sosaku (Creative) kokeshi which completely break away from traditional formats, Shingata dolls retain the classic silhouette of traditional Dento kokeshi but with a fresh, modern slant

• Hand-painted on these dolls are the legendary elderly couple Takasago

• Derived from a famous Noh play, the pair symbolize a happy, long-lasting marriage and growing old together in perfect harmony

Kokeshi with Camellia Motif Kimono

• Sousaku “Creative” Style Kokeshi by award-winning artisan Kazuo Takamizawa (1927~ )

• Born in Gunma Prefecture, he began producing kokeshi in his early 20s

• Gunma is well-known for having many prominent sosaku kokeshi craftspeople

• Initially, he produced dolls with very little colour, decorating mainly using pyrography (wood-burning) techniques, which has been used on this kokeshi

• In the 1970s, he introduced bold colours to his designs and won many awards, including the Prime Minister’s Award

• This doll is named Tsubaki‍ or ‍camellia with the flower featured on the design of her kimono

• Camellias bloom during the harsh cold of winter retaining their green leaves, therefore symbolizing vitality and patience

• They have long been planted in shrines and temple grounds as they are considered to be sacred trees that have the power to ward off evil

Kumamoto Prefecture Regional Souvenir Kokeshi

• Kyodo Kokeshi are regional dolls created based on local cultural themes such as folk songs, historical figures and traditional performing arts

• These regional kokeshi were produced as souvenirs during the Showa era tourist boom (around mid 1950s-mid 1980s) and were highly collectable

• They could also be acquired through specialized hobby associations via a monthly subscription model, as we know in this case by the original box

• This kokeshi was made in Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu, and represents the lullaby Itsuki no Komoriuta

• It portrays a young nursemaid wearing a traditional white work-headband and carrying a sleeping baby on her back

• From the feudal Edo period (1603~) through to the early 20th century, young girls from impoverished families were sent to wealthy households to work as live-in babysitters, often to pay off family debt

• The girls were typically between 5 to 12 years old, meaning they were children themselves

• The lyrics of this lullaby convey how they miss their families while caring for someone else’s infant

• Today, while appreciating their poignant historical context, we also enjoy these dolls as a tender representation of a mother and daughter dynamic

Fukuoka Prefecture Regional Souvenir Kokeshi

• Kyodo Kokeshi are regional dolls created based on local cultural themes such as folk songs, historical figures and traditional performing arts

• These regional kokeshi were produced as souvenirs during the Showa era tourist boom (around mid 1950s-mid 1980s) and were highly collectable

• They could also be acquired through specialized hobby associations via a monthly subscription model, as we know in this case by the original box and catalogue insert

• This kokeshi was made in Fukuoka Prefecture in Kyushu, and represents the folk song Kuroda Bushi, featuring warrior Tahei Mori

• He holds a Nihongo (one of the three great spears of Japan) and next to him is a large red Sakazuki (sake cup)

• According to legend, Lord Kuroda sent his vassal, Tahei Mori, on an errand to a rival lord who was known to be a heavy drinker

• Tahei was tested by the rival lord who poured him a huge cup of sake, declaring he would grant him any reward should he drink all of its contents

• Not only did Tahei drain the entire cup in a single gulp, he continued to drink all of it despite the cup being refilled repeatedly, all while maintaining his composure

• Once the challenge was completed, Tahei claimed his prize - the Nihongo (spear) which had been gifted to this rival lord by Japan’s second “Great Unifier”, Toyotomi Hideyoshi

• As the rival lord was also drinking at the same pace, he honored the reward to Tahei

• Upon sobering up the next day, he realized he had given away a national treasure and sent a messenger to retrieve the spear, however, Tahei refused

• Iwami Ware is a traditional craft from the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture

• Fired at high temperatures using high-quality clay, the ware is characterized by its exceptional durability and resistance to both acid and water

• These types of vessels are often used for pickling umeboshi (plums) or making miso

• This vase has a striking vivid copper-green glaze dripped over a white slip or glaze that has been applied with the hakeme (large brush stroke) technique
