This monkey sculpture is based on an eight-panel sculpture at Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, carved during the Edo Period
The relief depicts eight stages of life enacted by monkeys, the “Three Wise Monkeys” being the most notable
They represent the principle of Mizaru (not seeing), Kikazaru (not hearing), and Iwazaru (not saying)
During the Meiji Period (1868-1912), the “Three Wise Monkeys” was introduced to the western world
This lead to the coinage of the proverb “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”
