Vintage piece most likely from late Showa Period (1966~1989)
Age can be seen by glue discoloration on white sections of the mask
Small mask used for decorative purposes
Hariko or papier-mache craft is said to have originated in China in the 2nd Century and introduced to Japan during the Heian Period (794~1192)
Paper or a similar material is layered over a mould made from wood or clay and the inside is left hollow
Tengu are winged mythical creatures that inhabit mountainous areas and are a type of “yokai”, supernatural beings
Decorating the home with tengu masks wards off evil and misfortune, as well as protects the household
They can also be a lucky charm for good fortune, business prosperity, and represent the fulfillment of a great wish
