  • Negoro-nuri is a technique where vermilion lacquer is layered over black, then carefully polished to reveal some of the black beneath

  • The name "Negoro" comes from a monk at Negoro-ji Temple in Kishu (present-day Wakayama Prefecture), who is credited with creating this style of lacquerware

  • Akebono-nuri features a vermilion pattern on a contrasting black background

  • Each cup is a kurinuki type, meaning it is carved from a single piece of wood that has been hollowed out

  • Lacquerware cups can be used for both hot and cold beverages
