Set of Three Dento (Traditional) Type Kokeshi
Sakunami-kei: Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture
Usually has a thin body, lathe lines on the shoulders and lower part of the body with crab-like chrysanthemum patterns drawn in between
This listed Sakunami-kei kokeshi has a ring around its base
Marked on base from right to left: “Sakunami”, and artisan signature “Teruyuki” (Teruyuki Hiraga)
Yajiro-kei: Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture
Usually have double or multiple circles on the top of the head in vibrant colours, the head itself is large, the neckline has a collar, and the body is either straight or has a feminine waistline
The listed Yajiro-kei kokeshi is very colourful and unvarnished
Marked on base: artisan signature “Shione Ikeuchi”
Naruko Type: Naruko Onsen, Miyagi Prefecture
Usually has a melon-shaped head, a sturdy body with chrysanthemum patterns on its body, and a due to the technique used by the artisan when inserting the head into the body, it has a distinctive squeaking sound when the neck is twisted
The listed Naruko-kei kokeshi has stripes on its body rather than chrysanthemum patterns
Marked on base: artisan signature “Shiokazu” (Shiokazu Takahashi)
