Vintage Sousaku “Creative” Style Kokeshi from Mid-Showa Period (1960s-1970s)
Crafted by Masao Watanabe (1917-2007), an artisan from Fukushima Prefecture
He lived in the US for a time where he and his family were held in internment camps during World War
Upon returning to Japan, he began to produce kokeshi in the 1950s, originally studying the tradtional Yajiro Style before switching to Sousaku
Masao Watanabe was considered to be one of the most prolific Sousaku Style Kokeshi craftsmen in the 20th century
“Chigozakura” was one of his most-known doll designs and awarded the Prime Minister's prize in 1963, as well as presented to the Beatles following their visit to Japan in 1966
