Kimekomi Doll of Kabuki Actor Performing Kagamijishi (Lion Dance)
Vintage from latter Showa Period (1970s)
Kimekomi Ningyo are said to originate in Kyoto with around a 280 year history
They are traditional Japanese Dolls where kimono fabric and hands are inserted into grooves carved onto the body
Facial features are hand-painted onto heads made of plaster using special fine-tipped brushes
Kagamijishi is a Kabuki Dance first performed in the Meiji Period (1868-1912)
The story is of a lady-in-waiting who becomes possessed by a Lion’s spirit after she puts her hand into a lion head mask while dancing for the Shogun
Most notably, the contrasting roles of refined woman and wild lion spirit are played by the same actor
Marked “Showa 51, May” (1976) on lacquer display base, indication this may have been an ornamental piece to celebrate Children’s Day on May 5
